The Blanket

The daily reader Courage to Change has a great reading on detachment with love. The author of the page for January 22 (page 22) shares that her alcoholic spouse would often fall out of bed, and she would always get up and help him back into bed.

After learning about detachment in an Al-Anon meeting, the next time he fell out of bed, she left him on the floor, stepped over him, and got back into bed, proud of having acted with detachment.

Later she learned that this was not detachment with love. With this new understanding, the next time the alcoholic fell out of bed, she covered him with a blanket — and then stepped over him and got back into bed. This is an image of detachment with love.
